Exploring locality: The impact of context on Indigenous vocational education and training aspirations and outcomes

link to website
by Susan Gelade, Tom Stehlik
The impact of urban, regional, and remote location on Indigenous vocational education and training (VET) students' aspirations and outcomes is examined in this report. It finds the availability of desired courses, teaching staff, and community attitudes to learning in the various locations influence the success of outcomes of Indigenous students.
However, successful outcomes other than those related to employment or further education can emerge from VET. Accordingly, the authors suggest benefits such as improved literacy and confidence, and community wellbeing should be considered when formulating Indigenous learning approaches.

Less is More: Designing an Online Course

link to website

"In keeping with the intent of DEOSNEWS to offer a mix of practice descriptions and research results, this month’s issue offers a reflection on practice by a professor emeritus of journalism and American studies at the Pennsylvania State University.

Faculty workload in the online environment is a commonly identified focus of concern among participating and non-participating faculty alike. Of particular concern is the possibility that teaching online courses may sentence instructors to become the slaves of their course e-mail, threaded discussions, or chats. The emphasis of this article by an experienced online instructor is on balancing structure and openness in the design and management of online courses to promote a positive experience for both students and teachers."

Disruptive technologies

"In this second article in the EDUCHAOS series Marie Jasinski explores what disruptive technologies are all about and how we need a disruptive attitude to turn potential threats into opportunities. Maybe the new mantra for the knowledge era should be disruptable rather than sustainable!"

Project-based Distrubuted Learning and Adult Learners

Project-based Distrubuted Learning and Adult Learners

Dr. Erkan TEKINARSLAN
Abant Izzet Baysal University
TURKEY

INTRODUCTION

Attending a traditional or residential learning environment to gain new knowledge or skills demand major time commitment. For working professionals with family responsibilities, the pursuit of knowledge and training in the traditional manner is gradually becoming unattainable (Atieh, 1998). However, advances in computer and communication technologies have provided new distributed learning opportunities for adult learners. Seidel and Chatelier (1994) define the term distributed learning as “multi-way knowledge dissemination among teams, crews, etc.” (p. 2). In this study I adapt the definition of distributed learning as an educational format that involves multidimensional interactions (e.g., collaborations, discussions, feedback, lectures, etc.) among teachers and learners, at a distance, utilizing a variety of computer and telecommunication technologies.

hmmn...: Movable Type tutorial -- How to add a "sidebar" to your blog

Movable Type tutorial -- How to add a "sidebar" to your blog
This is a tutorial for those who would like to include a "Moblog" sidebar or section within their main blog, as I have done here on Hmmn. I wrote this initially at the request of Kevin of MFOP, for other mobloggers who were asking him how to do it. However, it doesn't have to be used for a "moblog" sidebar only. In fact, my "Of Momentary Interest" sidebar of web links was done using the same method. At heart, what we're doing is pulling the content of one blog into another one.

mphoto2mt Bug
Last night at around 2:30AM, as I was dropping off to sleep, my mind drifted over my freshly minted perl code only to realize that there was an obvious bug which would give every image in a multiple image message the same thumbnail.
Well, it's now fixed and available at the same place, here.

Photo mBlogging
I've put together my own email to MoveableType gateway. It's actually mostly Dav's with the Japanese language and hiptop nation pieces stripped out. I also used randomlyhumming's ImageMagick code as an example of how to generate thumbnails. Finally, I made some adjustments of my own to give the image pop-window a size and the thumbnail image tag height and width attributes.
You can get it here.
I would have rather expanded on randomlyhumming's work, adding category support back in along with my image attribute features. But for some reason the MIME parts weren't being handled right, resulting in images not being decoded. This being the first time I've done any perl scripting, I didn't want to push my luck.

gme.jp: How to make a moblog sidebar in MovableType

How to make a moblog sidebar in MovableType
There is already one tutorial linked to at Mfop2 that documents a way to make a sidebar that displays moblog pictures in your main blog using PHP. I've found another way that is conceptually very similar, but uses a Movable Type plugin instead and may even be a bit simpler. I will assume that you've read the tutorial linked to above and keep my explanation to the bare bones.

T3

Palm InfoCenter | Software Store

T3Rotate is a simple utility designed to overcome this small but annoying oversight in the Palm OS DIA (Dynamic Input Area) design. Tap the rotate button once to rotate your screen in the usual way, but a second tap rotates the screen again instead of rotating your screen back to portrait. It is completely configurable, allowing you to rotate your screen from Portrait, to Right-handed Landscape, to Left-Handed Landscape, and even to Upside-down Portrait if you like! Run it once to configure rotation modes, then forget about it as it works completely in the background, with an option to reload itself on resets.
